Installation of Hot Water Systems

We Can provide you with advice as to the best location for installing hot water systems on the Sunshine coast. Things to consider and solutions to any issues that may arise. Changes in regulation today have made hot water systems safer and provide protection for the tanks so that they can last longer. With this in mind it can change the way its installed.

New storage units require a pressure relief valve and a cold expansion valve. Expansion in the hot water system occurs when the water temperature in the tank is increasing.

Hot Water Systems Installed Inside

Hot Water units can be installed inside safely. To start with it must have protection against flooding the building. The Hot Water System is placed inside a safe Tray to catch any water. Safe Trays when possible should be connected to a Drain to move water outside of the building.  If your safe tray cannot be connected to a drain there are other ways to get around the problem.

Safety Shut of Valve

Safety Shut-Off Valve

A safety shut-off valve is a device installed between the water supply tap and the Hot water service. It operates with the use of a sensor placed at the bottom of the tray. If the sensor detector water the solenoid will shut off the water supply to the unit.

Hot Water Systems Installed Outside

When a HWS is installed outside no safe trays are required. The units are placed on a hard surface which is most likely to be on a concrete slab or path. Note that the two valves on the unit that drip water must not be discharged onto a pathway. It helps if a drainage grate is close by to discharge the water to it.

In the situation where there is no drainage close by it can be discharged into the garden but as far away from the buildings foundations as possible. keeping the area wet close to the building’s foundation can attract termites or even cause subsidence in the footings.

Valves On Electric Hot Water Systems

Just some knowledge as to what your Electric hot Water system requires on the Sunshine coast. To start with a duo Valve, is a non-return valve and isolation tap all in one. Have you heard of a Tempering Valve, this is a mandatory component that limits the temperature to a maximum of 50 degrees. It’s a great device to keep children safe. Cold Expansion valves. these valves haven’t always been part of the installation but are now part of the standards to follow. What is does, this valve releases a small amount of water to prevent the tank pressure from building up too much while it’s in a heating cycle. It can protect the Tank from continued expansion and contraction and also overpressure.

Pressure limit Valves are often installed on Hot Water Systems in older homes where there is no control device on the main water supply. The sole purpose of this valve is to Protect the Hot water system from overpressure. this can occur when the main water supply has high pressure or a possible surge at night when water usage drops in your community.

I think most know of the Pressure relief valve, it can be for some a pastime to walk past the hws and pull the lever. This valve is for safety and is one of the most important. The PRV will release hot water when the water in the tank becomes too hot or there is too much pressure in the tank.

Conventional Solar vs. Solar Heat Pumps

Solar panels on your roof drawing energy from the sun are very effective and can provide enough hot water for your home. Without the need for boosting by other means of energy most of the time.

Limitation of solar panels.

Your solar panel loses efficiency during winter months as the sun is lower in the sky and during times of bad weather where boosting may be needed adding to the running cost.

Heat pumps operate by a heat exchanger within a storage tank, in simple terms it’s a modified reverse cycle air conditioner that can also be set to run on off-peak power, the heat pump can operate day and night and in colder temperatures, as low as -10 to -15 degrees. Limitations, heat pumps require the running of a fan which could disturb if it is too close to a bedroom, but many systems have improved to a very low operating noise.

Note: At Dickson Plumbing and Gas Fitting all of our Hot Water system installations are quoted to replace all of the required valves. All too often I see installations that have been installed by other companies and they leave the old valves installed. This can make their quotes a cheaper Price. Valves on hot water systems most often won’t last as long as the tanks. They certainly won’t last the life of two tanks, meaning that you will be up for an extra service charge to have them replaced later.

Quality installation, please note the workmanship in all of our pictures of installation on this website. This is what you can expect in all of our installs. Job Done Right!
